Encourage more colour into your Autumn

August 27, 2020

A brand new business in Hailsham Town Centre is promising to brighten up our lives with the opening of a contemporary floral design studio and florist. Greg from Flowers by Maybugs explains how Dahlias can bring Autumn straight into your home.

As we head into September and start to think of the days drawing in and the onset of the gorgeous autumnal colours, why not bring the sunshine back into your home with stunning Dahlias.

There are lots of reasons to love these big beautiful blooms, available in almost every shade of colour except blue, in fact there are over 50,000 varieties to choose from and they are the longest lasting of cut flowers too.

To prepare your Dahlias for your vase display, strip off all the leaves that would be below the water line. This is true for all flower arrangements, not just Dahlias.

When leaves stay under water they decay and release bacteria that will shorten the life of your flowers.

Make sure you change the water in the vase every couple of days and trim each stem again by about 2-3cm, this will encourage them to drink more. Also adding some flower food, or preservative will help the blooms last that bit longer too.

Don’t get too restricted by what you think your display ‘should’ look like, get creative, add in some twigs or foliage from around the garden, if it makes

you happy then who cares what the flower arranging rules say… And after all rules are made to be broken!

Dahlias can be combined with many other types of flowers including all those gorgeous English Roses which are now in full bloom, but I think they look their most spectacular when arranged in a vase on their own… let the Dahlia sing!

Have a lovely Autumn, Greg, Flowers by Maybugs
