Chairman of Wealden District Council Councillor Ron Reed read the proclamation at the War Memorial in Hailsham High Street at 4pm on Sunday (11 September). The event was attended by civic dignitaries including the deputy lord-lieutenant Amanda Hamblin and council leader Councillor Ann Newton.
The district proclamation followed the proclamation at St James’ Palace on Saturday and at county level in Lewes earlier on Sunday.
This traditional event takes place in towns and cities across the country to announce the accession which took place immediately after the Queen’s death.
It represents one of the first occasions for people to gather and reflect on this moment in our nation’s history when the reign of our longest-serving monarch ended and our new sovereign succeeded.
A book of condolence has been opened at Wealden District Council offices’ reception in Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, and is available for members of the public to write messages in between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday until Tuesday 20 September.
Anyone wishing to lay flowers in memory of the Queen can place these at the War Memorial in Hailsham. For details of where to lay flowers in other locations in towns and parishes please contact the relevant Town or Parish Council.
